A wedding photo QR code may fail because the phone cannot recognise the printed pattern, the code opens an incorrect address, or the upload page cannot load over the available internet connection.
These are different problems. Identify whether scanning, navigation or uploading is failing before changing the design.
The phone does not recognise the code
Increase the printed size and make sure the complete square is visible. A camera may struggle when the code is too small, blurred or surrounded by complicated decoration.
Check for:
- insufficient contrast;
- cropped outer edges;
- missing clear space;
- low-resolution printing;
- stretching or distortion;
- graphics overlapping the pattern;
- physical damage to the sign.
The code is too small
A code that works from a laptop screen may become unreliable after being reduced for a table card.
Print a larger proof and test it from the real scanning distance. See what size a wedding QR table card should be.
There is not enough contrast
Dark modules on a pale plain background are generally the safest combination. Very pale brand colours or patterned backgrounds may look attractive but reduce recognition.
Do not invert or recolour the code without testing several devices.
The sign is reflective
Glass, acrylic and glossy lamination can reflect venue lights. Move the sign, alter the angle or use a matte surface.
A code may work during daylight setup and become difficult after evening lighting begins.
The code opens the wrong page
Scan the source file and compare the destination with the intended event address.
Possible causes include:
- an old event URL was used;
- the wedding slug changed after printing;
- the code was copied from another design;
- a shortened link expired or changed;
- the printed proof came from an older file.
A printed static QR code cannot be updated automatically when the encoded address changes.
The page opens but asks guests to log in
The printed code may be pointing to the couple dashboard rather than the guest uploader.
Guests should receive the event upload link only. Keep administrative access and passwords private.
Read how QR privacy and guest access work.
The page loads slowly or not at all
Test the direct link using both mobile data and venue Wi-Fi. The code may be working correctly while the connection is weak.
Ask the venue:
- whether guest Wi-Fi is available;
- whether it reaches reception areas;
- whether a password or room number is required;
- whether large uploads are restricted;
- whether many connected guests reduce performance.
Photographs upload but videos fail
Videos are larger and may exceed configured file or request limits. Test a supported video before the wedding.
Guests can also save the direct link and upload large clips later using home Wi-Fi.
See the wedding video collection guide.
Some phones work and others do not
Increase the code size, improve contrast and simplify the surrounding design. Test both Apple and Android cameras.
Make sure the direct address is printed as a backup for guests whose phones do not recognise the code.
The upload button appears unresponsive
The page should immediately disable the button and show progress. Without visual feedback, guests may tap several times or close the page.
If the page truly does not submit, note the device, browser, file type and approximate file size before troubleshooting.
Emergency wedding-day alternatives
If printed signs fail during the event:
- send the direct link to the wedding party;
- display the URL on another sign;
- place a working code on a tablet or phone screen;
- send the link in the guest group message;
- remind guests that they can upload later.
Use the full QR testing checklist before ordering replacement signs.
Frequently asked questions
Why will my wedding QR code not scan?
The most common causes are small print size, weak contrast, missing clear space, glare, distortion or poor print quality.
Why does the QR code scan but the page not load?
The destination may be incorrect or the venue internet connection may be unavailable. Test the direct address separately.
Can a printed QR code be changed after printing?
A static code cannot be altered. If the encoded event address changes, the code must be replaced unless a controlled redirect was used.
Separate scanning problems from connection problems
WedSnap provides a direct guest URL alongside the QR code, giving couples and guests a backup route when scanning conditions are difficult.
